Cellphones are getting slimmer, some will still shrink, thanks to the world’s first ultra-thin (0.9 mm) waterproof piezoelectric speaker, this latest model (VSLBG1914E1400-T0) from Koyoto-based Murata Manufacturing Company Ltd comes as a cost-effective solution to be used in such mobile devices as PDAs, digital cameras and 3G mobile phones for better quality sound output.

As opposed to the conventional dynamic speakers which require covering of the sound output holes with waterproof sheets to achieve waterproof quality, these piezoelectric speakers are already waterproofed with no use of waterproof sheets hence eliminating the cost of sheet material, its application and the eventual degradation of sound quality caused by the covering.

The solar panel on its skin is located at the back, and is capable of providing a 5 Volt charge, it reportedly can charge up an in built battery in just 3 hours of sunlight. Transferring the power to an iPhone battery, may take longer but it can provide a few valuable minutes of talk time. May come in handy during emergencies. Nevertheless a useful innovation.

Universal Mobile phone charger

The U.N. telecoms agency said Friday it has approved technology for a universal cell phone charger that aims to reduce the confusion, clutter and waste caused by today’s mobile phones.

So this means that every time you buy a new phone in the market irrespective of the brand or model, they will have the same battery charger. The new chargers may also allow you to disconnect the charger and connect the plug to a computer USB port. So you may also be able to charge your phone through a computer.

The plug side of the charger is speculated to be a micro USB, as shown below

How would this change help you?

Its obvious, more people around you will have the same charger so you wont have to run around with a dying cell phone battery. Secondly, purchasing a mobile charger will become optional, so you may again save on costs, and the part why this change was actually brought into place, the new chargers made will be highly energy efficient and the technology used in them could lead to a 50 percent reduction in standby energy consumption and a cut of 13.6 million tons to greenhouse gas emissions each year.
