Google has launched a new application allows people to search for more information about a famous landmark or work of art simply by taking a photo of that object. Sadly for some of us, this application currently works only on phones with Googles Android OS.

Google Goggles recognizes tourist attractions, famous paintings and company logos. All you would need to do is focus the phone’s camera on an object, and Google compares elements of that picture against its database of images. When it finds a match, Google will tell you the name of what you’re looking at, and provide a list of results linking through to the relevant web pages and news stories. Google claims Goggles can recognise tens of millions of objects and places.

Android is simply a mobile operating system running on the Linux.  It is developed by Google and later passed on to the Open Handset Alliance. It allows phone software developers to write managed code in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

Here are some of the benefits of the Android Mobile Operating System:-

  • User Experience: Allows developers to design applications on top of your platform, this provides the ability for users to have unique experiences designed specifically for them. The Mobile Android OS will have thousand different versions of the same operating system each tweaked slightly so that it fits the owners needs. It also will allow people to share the coolest parts of their user experience across all networks.
  • Standardization: Developers have a standardized way of creating applications for users without having to worry about platform. The standard platform also helps define documentation, procedures and application sharing.
  • Cost: Since this an Open platform, the cost involved is far lesser than mainstream products. This will likely induce a cut in cost of operating systems like Windows Mobile and Palm OS.
  • Innovation: Giving developers the access to such powerful and flexible platforms will encourage increased innovation as they compete to develop the next best application in the market.
  • Support: Open Platforms on the same foundation means there are more Developers on the same platform, which increases  the amount of support available.
