The problem turns out to be the fading of the laser-sensitive ink in the sandwich layer between the clear plastic and the reflective surface.

However the Original pre recorded movie and game DVDs that are purchased from the retail stores are supposedly long lasting as they use a different manufacturing process.

Cranberry a DVD maker, has come out with a DVD that will last 1000 years!.

Their DVDs cost $35 and and only the company will burn the DVD for you. Not something we may like at all. So for now its back to the Thumb Drives and Portable HDDs
