Gone are the days where you just used Cellphones to talk, play games and surf the net. Now in developing countries where money is tight and malaria runs rampant, Cellphones are serving as microscopes!

Cellphone microscopy will enable visualization of patient blood samples that are critical for disease diagnosis. Images captured by health workers on a microscope-equipped cell phone could be annotated, organized, and transmitted to medical experts at major medical centers for analysis and recommendation.

This device will also save a lot of the time and money spent on sending medical teams to diagnose patients in remote locations. Poverty stricken regions around the globe and many developing countries can benefit from this technology.

In a latest addition to this development, Aydogan Ozcan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and member of the California Nano Systems Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles has made the DIY (do it yourself version) Cellphone microscope within the $10 mark, taking this one step closer to reality. There is no lens which is used in his version of the microscope, the magnification is handled entirely by software, holograms and electronics. That is how he managed to get all this done in the $10 mark.
