Its about time somebody makes the Only mode of transportation that has managed to save more lives than it has lost, a lot Safer! Yes, it is the good old Helicopter. Guess what? Nasa is working on adding airbags on it to make it a lot safer.
In case some of us don’t know, Helicopters can save lives even when they run of fuel, or its engine stalls. Well if your more than 100 feet high, and traveling fast enough, Auto-Rotation kicks in. This basically is means that the choppers rotors are still running and can provide enough resistance for the chopper so that it doesn’t fall to the ground. However, Auto-rotation does not necessarily mean a soft landing, Landings can still be rough and may even result in severe injuries.
NASA’s Subsonic Rotary Wing Project is developing a pair of expandable kevlar cushions between the skids. During the test an helicopter was dropped at a height of 35 feet, achieving a speed of 48 feet-per-second before hitting concrete. The helicopter and its simulant occupants were said to be largely undamaged. Now that is someĀ good stuff to hear. Future tests are said to be coming in the next year and, if all goes well, this technology could be up on most Helicopters.
