HDMI or High-Definition Multimedia Interface, is a compact audio video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital signal data. Basically all that a HDMI cable does is, carry audio and video signals at high bandwidth in one wire.
From the time of its development, there were significant advances in the Cable technology.
HDMI 1.0 to 1.2 : Had a maximum bandwidth 3.96 Gbits for video and 8 channel audio. This could easily support Full HD resolutions of 1080p and 24 bit audio
HDMI 1.3 and 1.3a : Released quite some time later than the 1.0 version. The new format could support bandwidths up to 340 MHz. It also included Output support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Audio streams.
HDMI 1.4 : Released last year, it has the ability to display resolutions of 4096*2160p. We are talking about theater quality resolutions! HDMI 1.4 has support for a 100 Mbps ethernet connection between 2 HDMI devices. So in this case, we are talking about actual 2 way communication between devices. This in return will support 3D, infact support several stereoscopic 3D formats.
